I still fondly remember one of Doug Bowen’s first wines, a 1976 Shiraz Cabernet, made from the first crop, which was an early entrant into my fledgeling cellar. Congratulations to the Bowen family, who are still producing some of the best value reds in the country. Very deep, shiny purple-red colour in the glass; lovely rich, ripe, stylish aromas of dark fruits, star anise and rich earthy compost allied with ripe herbal traces and a whiff of coconut. The palate is full-bodied and fleshy, with abundant supple fine-grained tannins and a long, long carry ending with a little alcohol warmth, well within balance. An extremely pleasing, lifted medium weight Shiraz. On the palate this wine exhibits classic plum and ripe raspberry fruit notes that are typically Shiraz. Lovely fresh oak tannins are intrinsically woven with the fruit to seamlessly add length and breadth. A hallmark of our wine is balance and this wine shows this even in its current youth - giving great cellaring potential. A delight to drink now or put away in the cellar.
